How is India doing at Olympics for Universities

We have exactly one year left for olympics to start and next one year is going to be one of the most exciting years for the Indian sports especially when it comes to Olympics sports. We are already at our first stop which is Olympics for University people also known as World University Games.

If we look at the history, we do not have a very strong history at World University Games with out total medal tally at 6 Golds, 6 Silvers and 8 Bronze medals in 30 editions of the games till now which started in 1959. This tally while looks much better than our performance at Olympics post 1959 but overall, we stand at 56th place in the world. However, this year it is going to be different. With India rising in different sports now and young blood has started performing at international standards, India is set to register its strongest performance in this edition.

Before we talk about why India is going to perform exceptional this year, lets have a look at last few editions and India's performance in them.

Clearly, our performance has not been the best in recent past but Thanks to Khelo India program and its maturity and our government's efforts, we have started seeing results. We have new stars in Shooting like Manu Bhakar, Aishwarya Tomar. In athletics, we have Jyoti Yarraji who holds national record for 100 metres hurdle now and many more in other sports.

This year, World university games is hosted by China and we will be witnessing 18 sports within next 12 days of sports extravaganza. India has sent a strong contingent of 250+ sportsperson and will be participating in 12 sports discipline including Archery, Athletics, Shooting being disciplines where we are expecting big wins. Sports extravaganza has already started from July 29 and will go till August 8. India has already broken records of all the years as India has won 11 medals till now including 5 Golds, 2 Silvers and 4 Bronze. With this unprecedented performance, India is currently ranked 4th in the medal table just behind China, Japan and South Korea. What is amazing to see is the fact India is above likes of USA and UK who are sports powerhouses and have also beaten African countries who have consistently performed in Athletics and other domains.

On July 29 and 30, India has won medals in Shooting, Archery and Judo. As per expectations, Manu Bhakar won 2 Gold medals in 10m air pistol in Individual and Team category. Elavenil Valarivan has also kept the expectations and have won Gold medal in Women 10 m Air rifle Individual.
